ResourSEAs: who we are

ResourSEAs is an innovative company founded in 2017 as an academic spin-off of the University of Palermo, bringing to the market twenty years of experience in the field of sustainable desalination and brine valorization.
The ResourSEAs team of engineers covers all sectors of innovation and planning with multidisciplinary skills ranging from prototyping to analytical characterization, from process modeling to technical-economic analysis, from sizing to automation.

Our Mission

We want to lead the ecological transition of the chemical and saline water treatment industries, achieving the transition from linear management to a circular economy model of saline solutions, which allows the recovery of water, energy and minerals without any additional environmental impact.
Our sustainable technologies integrate into existing processes and enable new ones, designed to meet the challenges of industry, utilities and coastal territories.

SEArcularMINE

EU Horizon 2020 project for the production of critical raw materials from salt pans brines.
ResourSEAs has designed and built a 40 ton/year demonstrator of magnesium hydroxide in Trapani.
The MF-PFR technology was developed and patented within the project.

MareMag LIFE

EU LIFE project launched in 2024, MareMag LIFE aims to produce magnesium hydroxide from industrial brines without the use of chemical reagents.
Building on the work done in the SEArcularMINE project, the project aims to lay the foundations for the construction of a 15,000 ton/year industrial plant by 2028.
It uses only renewable energy, in a completely circular approach.
Validations are planned in Trapani and subsequent replication in Greece.

REWAISE

As part of this Horizon 2020 project, ResourSEAs has achieved the integration of desalination and resource recovery by building a plant in Tenerife (Spain) for the recovery of useful materials (NaCl, magnesium hydroxide, calcite) from desalination brines through selective precipitation and reactive crystallization.

Our technologies

The Multiple-Feed Plug-Flow Reactor – MF-PFR

The Multiple-Feed Plug-Flow Reactor (MF-PFR) is a proprietary ResourSEAs system designed for the implementation of reactive crystallization processes.
One of the most common applications of this crystallizer is the production of magnesium hydroxide from brines.
This is achieved using an alkaline reagent such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH).

Membrane Concentrator
Device for minimizing the volume of waste brine, producing water for internal use within the system.
Reduces energy consumption by over 80% compared to conventional systems at the same salinity.

Electro-Membrane Concentrator
Electrodialysis device for the concentration of waste saline solutions, useful for the recovery of low-concentration acid or basic solutions, even in difficult conditions.

Electrodialysis with bipolar membranes
electromembrane technology for the production of hydrochloric acid and caustic soda from waste saline solutions, more flexible, modular and cost-effective even on a small scale compared to traditional chlor-alkali systems.
